Dreamy

I was a neurology nerd in my undergraduate years, and I’m still fascinated by the workings of our nervous system. Our brain generates enough electricity to power a small lightbulb!

Most dreams show up during the rapid eye movement (REM) stage of sleep. You’ll probably notice this if you have a pet; their eyes roll back and move when they sleep. Humans are the same at the later stages of sleep, which is why you might remember your last dream if you have longer periods of sleep as REM lengthens through the night.

The best explanation I have heard about how dreams work is that, as our eyes move quickly, our brain tries to explain the reason they’re moving. So, it pulls from recent and past experiences, and makes up a story, no matter how nonsensical it might be. The action happens every time your eyes move; the dream shifts in that direction. People who’ve experienced trauma are more likely to have stressful dreams because those pathways are available and often explored.
